30 years ago, I stayed in a tiny room at the top of this hotel. This time, I stayed in a tiny suite at the top in the new building. quite a change. This is a historicgerman hotel. The staff is pleasant and efficient but not on duty at night. Once the restaurant closes, the desk closes, and the doors lock. So make sure to have your key with you if you plan to stay out late. They even recommended we check out the night before as we had an early departure the next day. The room was clean and sparse but comfortable. If I had stayed longer I would have enjoyed the sitting area and the small kitchen was appealing. Breakfast options are traditional but of high quality. I ate in the restaurant twice and the food was traditional but very well prepared. The access from Karlsruhe is simple because it is located right on the tramway. I normally stay in Ettlingen for the restaurant options, but I would happily stay here again.

The hotel's location on the outskirts was excellent for hikes. The rooms are very clean. We could bring a dog to stay in and use very large rooms that allowed us to stay together with our dog and two kids.

Overall, I would say it is fine to stay there, but it may be worth driving to find another hotel. The hotel staff was friendly. The rooms were clean but spartan. Were more like German hotels of the is. Breakfast was limited and boring. Also, many of the meats were fat late. Parking was an issue like many German hotels.

I visited a few years ago and finally got back. The specialties that are served on the grill are excellent. It appears that the decoration of blackwald was moved up the hill, but it still looks classy. Heist himbeeren mit vanilla eis is also still excellent. We ran over all the dogs and were homesick for ourselves.
