Peaceful setting. Loved the remote aspect. Hope it doesn't have many more huts built. Clean areas and very friendly and helpful staff.

It is a very beautiful setting and the grounds are extremely lovely cultivated Hawaiian gardens. We saw a wild pig the first day we were there with her two little babies. Our hut was decorated in a Chinese theme and a ceramic dragon overlooked our room keeping us safe at night. The room is a little aged and a few things are rusty from the sea air, which I'm assuming is unavoidable due to how close it is to the ocean. It is slightly rustic accommodations, meaning there is window with screens for airflow rather than air conditioning. But there is a full bathroom and a kitchen without any cooking capabilities. But a sink and cupboards with the basics stocked and a fridge and microwave. You can see the ocean from the bed and you can hear the crashing waves day and night. There is bird song all day and bugs join in at night. It was very peaceful and quiet. We were able to go to a black sand beach nearby that was beautiful but had powerful rough waves and we saw about 20 dolphins jumping and playing in the water. There was a specific type of people in the area, a sort of new age hippie thing going on. The black sand beach nearby is a clothing optional beach but we went in the morning and everyone was clothed. But if yoga, vegan, pagan vibes are your vibes, this place is the spot. Very beautiful, peaceful, and quiet. Also quite remote, so be aware. Not much in the form of amenities. There is an outdoor shower that was really cool to use.

The experience of staying at Kalani Oceanside Retreat was very relaxing and beautiful. We enjoyed the yoga class we signed up for very much. The people we encountered, both guests and staff, were great to talk with. The cottage we stayed at had lots of room and we had a fabulous view of the ocean and grounds around us.

The location and atmosphere can't be beat. The area was very lush and gorgeous, and we could see the sunrise over the beach from our patio (and showers!). The cottages, each an individual standalone unit, had a wonderful rustic decor, with plenty of windows to enjoy the scenery. The establishment is not kidding about the lack of connectivity though: I couldn't connect to the complimentary wifi, and I had only emergency calls and no data through my Verizon provider. But if you want to go off the grid, this is the place! It was very quiet and peaceful at night, except for the coqui frogs. Some find their incessant chirp annoying, but I enjoyed it as part of the atmosphere. I wish I could have stayed longer, and I'll definitely be back if I have the opportunity.

This is an amazing location and off the beaten path. It was the perfect jungle/ocean experience. The room is amazing and you can feel the breeze and hear the birds while you relax. The only feedback I would give is to clean the mold from the shower and refresh the sheets. Sheets were clean, but smelled like they had been stored in Grandma’s musty closet too long.

Stayed at Cabin Kai 4 (Dec 26–30, 2025). Affordable and located in a beautiful, peaceful area with free parking, water, and Wi-Fi (weak). Major concern: No window coverings for the floor-to-ceiling bathtub window or windows above the bed and coffee bar, resulting in serious privacy issues while bathing and sleeping. This was very uncomfortable. Remote location (45 minutes from Hilo); a car is required. No cellphone reception. No nearby restaurants or shops. Towels were not very clean, and there is no AC

This property might be a good choice for adults who enjoy yoga and are comfortable with nudity. There are yoga classes on the property that guests can participate in and I wasn't aware when booking that the pool is clothing optional. It is not typical or a family friendly option. The property is in nice location. It is in the jungle so I don't expect complete comfort but the unit had alot of insects (including at least one really large cockroach that I killed on our first night). I bought some cleaning spray to wipe down some of the surfaces. There were wild pigs and untethered dogs on the property. The shower in the unit we were assigned did not work but the tub did. No airconditioning, it was very hot and humid. After check out the property contacted me to say they were charging me $120 extra to replace all the towels because a cleaning person found feces on the floor in the bathroom. I 100% dispute that assertion but even if it were true towels can be washed, certainly not all of them could be ruined, and they only provided 3 sets of towels total (for 3 people/ 3 night stay). The towels were old, nothing special (definitley wouldn't cost $120 to replace), and the floor is concrete...
