This hotel is not in Madeira, but is a little up a hill, the sat nav takes you through a rough forest route that we had to move fallen branches before we could get through. It is best to follow the road signs instead, and when you arrive the views are spectacular down to the town and the sea, but there is nothing there. It is a wild and lonely place and very exposed to the weather. When we arrived, we were shown to a clean, but very basic room whose door lead directly outside and let the rain in freely underneath. We were able to move to another room on the first floor not facing the wind, but it was still quite cold and the radiator was impossible to adjust. The young female Brazilian staff were very kind and did what they could, but eventually the owner brought a freestanding electric heater that worked. He made it clear he was not satisfied with this problem, but by that time I had the flu and needed to stay warm. He was very upset that we didn't have an evening meal in the hotel because of his unwell. The dining area is large but mostly empty, though we did see that if he had been a more welcoming and gracious host there would have been more people willing to make the journey to the restaurant. Dogs kept outside barked and howled all night and a cockerel woke us in the early morning.
