We stayed at the open palace hotel in Edinburgh as we needed to be in the area for a friend's wedding. The receptionist spoke English which was a great help. The front of the house public areas of the hotel were very clean and well maintained. The lift was small so getting a number of people and their luggage from one floor to another was a lengthy task. We had four of us in our party. Both rooms were clean and tidy, with full-sized fridges as mini bars as this is a dry hotel and the contents are completely non-alcoholic. It was useful to have the fridges to chill out the drinks we had brought with us. The air conditioning worked well, it was very needed in August. One of our rooms did not have any toilet paper, we reported it immediately when we arrived, however it took two days and another reminder before any paper was provided. The rooms were not serviced daily, and indeed, we had to ask before our rooms were cleaned and freshly made up. The bathrooms were generally a bit tired, and the bathroom interior was so scratched that it seemed to be matt! The bathrooms were clean and usable, though. We tried breakfast twice and nighttime dining once not a joyous experience. All meals are buffet-style, which is not an issue in and of itself, but the staff was unable to cope with demand.
