We stayed at the hostel California for one night, and it met our requirements. The place is more centered around backpackers than holiday makers like we were. There are a lot of amenities to make your own meals, but we ate at a local restaurant. We stayed in a private room with a shower and bathroom, which was adequate. We knew it was cheap and done on a budget, so this is what we expected. Parking is free and simple, making it convenient to walk to Bishop. I believe we felt a little out of place not being a backpacker in our late teens or early 20 s, but the people working there were very friendly, and it was ideal for a single night.

If you want to explore, this is a comfortable place to stay. Breakfast is not provided, and there are kitchen facilities available for cooking. The room is cramped but feels like you're staying in a dorm and collage days. I met hackers at the hostel. Wifi is bad. Customer service is very helpful and friendly. Overall, satisfactory.

As Ive mentioned before, everything about this location is excellent. In 15 years of staying in hostels around the world, Ive never felt as welcomed by staff members as I was from Ant, which is Anthony. He was inexplicably rude to me and my group from the moment I arrived, hesitantly answering questions and rushing through the procedure for how the house works. When we told him that our toilet was leaked water onto the bathroom floor, he told us he knew about the problem but offered no solution. After a full day of hostility towards us, I overheard him complaining to the other staff members in the kitchen about how much he hates hikers and how he can not wait for the hiker season to be over so theyll stop coming. Being a hiker, I eventually saw why he chose to make our stay as uncomfortable as possible. He complained arduously every time a new guest arrived to check in, but he was noticeably nicer to anyone who appeared to have money or was a lovely woman.

I can't speak highly enough about this unique and interesting experience in the bland US lodging scene. A full kitchen, bikes available, a library, and many things to help backpackers and climbers have a good time. Clean and fun! I believe Judd does an excellent job at the front desk. Motels are so boring. This place is like a student apartment, with friendly staff and people living there. So many things to make your stay as easy and enjoyable as possible.

Please be sure to check for current road closures during winter months. Highway 120 (Tioga Pass) typically closes from late October until late May. When the Tioga Pass Road is closed, it is not possible to drive to Tuolumne Meadows or enter Yosemite National Park from the east. All other park entrances, including those along Highway 120 from the west, Highway 140, and Highway 41, remain open all year.Guests are required to show a photo identification and credit card upon check-in. Please note that all Special Requests are subject to availability and additional charges may apply.
