It depends on what you're looking for. If you want fancy, amenities, this isn't for you. If you're looking for an affordable alternative to stay in Manhattan that is clean, with great owners, in a quiet, safe neighborhood, and just worried about a place to lay your head for the night, then this is the place for you. Being in East Harlem, it's a 3 block walk off the 6 train (2 down and 1 over), we found several excellent places in the area to eat that were clean, with good portions, at prices cheaper than I can eat in CT. We had an excellent experience, and will be staying here again in the future

Host was very friendly and helpful. The room was cozy and simple, exactly what I needed for this trip, and everything seemed clean and easy to navigate. There is an excellent pizza place down the street and the building wasn't far from the subway or from buses. Had a great experience and would stay again!

It's mid-March, so didn't need it. Arthur was polite and helpful. My room was clean and comfortable. The location was fine, there were bikes and scooters avaliable for rent to do more extensive roaming.

I stayed at the McGaw guesthouse with my husband and seven month old baby. The goats were super accommodating, friendly, and really made our stay comfortable. I am looking forward to returning.

Not the Waldorf Astoria and a bit pricey but NY city is expensive. The room was adequate for me and it was just a couple of blocks from the presentation I was attending...so it was convenient. The staff was nice and the house and kitchen accessible to the guests. The bed was very comfortable. Building dates back to the 1930s according to the family who owns the guesthouse so it is an older building which does show. Bring your toiletries but they do provide towels. You need to share an outside bathroom. Also it can be a bit noisy outside your window since a city train is close to the building and also they are doing construction on the block. Still I was satisfied with the convenience of staying at the guesthouse.

The location was outstanding for our needs near Central Park, and near the subway to get to our Broadway show. The service was very friendly and responsive to our needs. Our room, however, was better suited for a single traveler, and the biggest issue was a very soft mattress that neither one of us slept well on.

No A/C. Outlets are old and terrible. Bed was very uncomfortable. Poor locks, small bathrooms.

We knew this was a hostel-like situation, so we were not expecting a lot. However on the day of our arrival we received a message that their “ normal checking times are between 3 and 5 PM” but that we could “choose to check in after that for a small fee of $25.” They also offered to give us the WiFi password but they would not tell it to us and wanted to personally enter it on our phones. Even after doing that, the WiFi passwords were not correct and they refused to tell us what it was. That interaction was bizarre. There was a small ac unit which worked, but it was on the floor, and was rather loud and took up space. The bathroom was dirty: the toilet needed cleaning, there were dark colored stains on the walls near the toilet, the tiles needed scrubbing, and the toilet paper dispenser was held on the wall with some goo and that was falling off. The bathroom was the worst part of it all. If you’re comfortable with low cleanliness, this is fine. It was safe and the people were nice (WiFi debacle excluded). Overall 3/10

AWFUL. Pics out of date. Property NOT as described. Dirty and disheveled. Did not receive room I paid extra for. No water in. “Hot tub”. Hosts entered my locked room when I was gone and moved my belongings to a room without a lock. Then accused me of stealing their key when I left it in the lockbox I originally took it from upon arrival.

The host was kind, but the environment did not feel calm or secure during my stay. There was noticeable commotion when I arrived, and after reviewing past guest feedback, I realized this was not an isolated experience. I ended up leaving early and booking alternative accommodations. This may work for some, but it wasn’t the right fit for me, and I wouldn’t recommend it for travelers who prioritize quiet and a sense of safety.

This was the worse experience I have ever had using Expedia or any other private hosting service. NYPD had to be called to rescue us from our room after a fight between the owner and her son broke out in the living room. The police supervisor advised us that this location is a know narcotic drug spot and advised against any future stay. We left immediately and were fortunate to find other last minute accommodations.

Never received received a key lock code and no one returned my phone calls or text… we had no where to stay and all our plans were ruined… worst service and experience ever and we have travelled abroad…. Thank goodness I took the travel protection and expect a full refund… so disappointing!!!

This house is a scam. Because it's merely uninhabitable. No heating. No glass in the window. The frame is fulled with non-transparant plastic AND a piece of cardboard fixed by ADHESIVE TAPE. Just go to NYC dot gov site and see that this property is a subject of multiple code violations. Plus - unsanitary! In fact, in the major search engine listings this property is seen as "permanently closed". Only through this service this scam continues. More details: The rate for this is $206 per night. The building where Macaw Guest House situated is inhabitable. In particular: there was no heating in the room I was given. Temperature inside the room was the same as outside, about 60F. The window was unglazed. Instead of the glass the window frame was filled with nontransparent plastic and a piece of cardboard fixed with adhesive tape. all electric outlets were extremely worn and not holding plugs, at some spots the wiring was opened. The description of the room as it appears on the Hotels dot com website is false: The bunk bed that's described as “select comfort bed” is a swaying, unstable rusty construction that makes noise and appears to be close to falling apart. No any “City View”, just a wall of the front building. That can be rather sensed than seen as the window has no glass, but covered with non-transparent plastic, cardboard and adhesive tape. Also, the bedding and the towel was not fresh smelly. The shared bathroom was rusty, with many sports of mold.

Stayed here for 4 nights. The first 3 were ok. The 4th night was the night from hell. The host and at least one other person (partner?) were having screaming arguments - we were woken up at least 3 times during the night. We were hoping to make an early breakfast (7:00 a.m. ish) on the morning of our departure, but the screaming arguments continued so we left as quickly as possible. It's a shame because otherwise this place would be adequate, but if you can't get a decent night's sleep it's not worth it.

My husband chose this because it said “boutique guest house.” It is the most minimal of hostels. It is for traveling students. It is not for anyone looking for any semblance of comfort. It is ugly, uncomfortable, loud, creepy, and inhospitable.

Avoid at all costs. I left because the behaviour of the proprietor made me feel unsafe. I endured one hour of her screaming at staff and guests, threatening to kick another guest out. Expedia needs to remove this property asap
