Great hotel, very clean and friendly. 5min walk to the station and close to a grocery store. Restaurant on the first floor which had some really tasty food!. Plus you get a discount as a guest. Highly recommend staying here.

This family-run guest house is very clean, comfortable and in a good neighborhood. No, it is not located in the tourist area but if you're in any decent shape, walking 20 mins to the subway isn't a big deal for a cheaper accommodation. There is a grocery store nearby, and guests have access to the kitchen. We would definitely stay again on our next trip to Kyoto.

The only problems i have with this hotel is that a hot shower costs money each time you use it and then that the hotel is situated quite far from the central station. Otherwise the staff was helpful and spoke english pretty well and the hotel rented bikes which is a must in Kyoto

I spent one week at this hotel at the end of July, and overall it was satisfactory. The reason I am not giving it a 5 star rating is because of the location (it is about a 30 to 40 minutes bus ride from the station, depending on traffic, although the bus stop is right by the hotel), the fact that the mattress tends to be pretty thin and you feel like you're sleeping directly on the frame of the bed, the pillow is pretty flat, and there is a 100 yen fee per shower; I do believe that the shower price should be included with the room. Otherwise, it is very nice and clean. The common kitchen allows you to meet and hang out with your fellow travelers, and after a long day sightseeing, it feels really great to be able to exchange impressions and tips. There is a Chinese restaurant on the first floor where guests get 10% off, and the food is good. There are also two supermarkets nearby, one of them opened all night and the other one providing more prepared meals. Overall, I would recommend it if you don't mind the distance to the station.

This is a hostel, not a hotel. It has limited shared bathrooms and kitchens, the walls are paper thin and it is expensive for what it offers. It is clean and there was a well meaning, helpful manager.

Fuimos 3 noches.

First up it's far from central Kyoto. The nearest subway is about a mile away and then you still need to change 2 more different trains before you can get to Kyoto station. However, from the nearby subway you can get to Arashiyama in about 2 stops on the same train. Also, there's a bus stop about 50 yards away from the hotel (bus 73) that can take you to and from Kyoto station in about 40 minutes depends on traffic. This hotel is weird. You have to clean after yourself. There's no room service. You have to put down a deposit of 10000 yens for the room (not the key) in case you forgot to take out the trash or something like that. You need to pay 100 yens for the hot water you're going to use. I wonder if they ever clean the room before renting it out to the next guest(s). It's on a busy street so it is noisy. If you can afford it stay some where nearer to central Kyoto instead of wasting time on a bus or a train.

Overall, our stay at the Kamikatsura House was only ok. It was very cold when we were there and the AC was not working, so it was very cold in the room. The walls are very thin so if you have loud neighbors, you will hear them. However, we didn't spend very much time here during the day and it met our needs. The staff was willing to help when we had questions. The hotel is very far from Kyoto Station - about a 40 minute bus ride, but there is a station right outside the hotel. I personally think I it is a little overpriced for what they offer, but overall it was fine.
