We would rate this place a 4.5, but it is not possible. Overall, we loved this location. Its ryokan in varying degrees as you enter, check in, and then go to utmost service area to get towels, shampoo creams, etc. There are many options, although not typical. Then you proceed to the room where the futons are already set up. Im not sure if this is because of covid or staffing shortages but its okay because the entire space is taken by the chairs. Although im not positive i think this may be due to covac or fewer staff, it prevents you from unwinding in the suite because all the space has been taken up by them. In the middle of the mountains, the onsen is simply amazing, with private bathrooms outside which were the best weve had in japan for 15 years. I am not clear why the coffee and amenities stop in evenings doubt anyone would be stealing or abusing them, yet at 9 00 everything shuts down. Food was delicious, though ill have eaten more. Clean and comfortable accommodation. Would recommend for the baths and the excellent location and very friendly dinner service.

The service here was excellent. My husband and i spent the night celebrating our wedding anniversary. The private baths were fantastic, and everyone was incredibly kind. Also, the dinner was delectable.

The food is delicious. I would only return for the supper and breakfast experience. The staff is very kind. Its a very quiet place. Although the hotel itself is old and has the feel of being in an old rural japanese house, it was exactly what my partner and i needed. Silence, nature, food, and hot baths in the thermal spring during freezing weather. Will definitely be back.

It was a pleasure to spend one night there. It is quite simple to locate the ryokan, which is close to the bus stop on the line from takawa. The personnel were friendly and inviting. Although somewhat ancient, the rooms were clean, and the bathroom had some mildew. We also enjoyed breakfast and dinner, both of which were excellent experiences. To get an idea of how and what it is based on japanese cuisine, one can sample many of the local dishes in smaller quantities. Additionally, there are four private outdoor onsens on site. These were really nice because they provide privacy while taking brisk bathing. You wont be able to stay there for definite periods because the water is so hot, but thats okay because everyone has the opportunity to turn. Overall, it has been incredibly authentic and wonderful experience.

We stayed here for two nights and had a great time. The service was excellent, the onsen was amazing, staff were amazing and the hot spring was fantastic. It was perfect for 40 degrees, it was freezing there for about 40-60 minutes.

I would like to return if i were to visit this area again! Ryokan gizan was a lovely place to stay. I felt very well taken care of here. The staff was friendly and welcoming and did their best to make our stay comfortable, including accommodating our dietary requirements (no beef). When ive felt ill during my stay, the staff has medicine on hand and constantly checks on me to ensure he is okay - incredibly touched! The rooms were spacious and comfortable and the indoor and outdoor onsens are both very enjoyable.
