This historic tavern is well-preserved and well run. My partner & I stayed in-house but had our meals in the bar downstairs and enjoyed the boutique beer/cider. The atmosphere is relaxing & the meals well-presented and very enjoyable. The staff were very welcoming and helpful with any enquiries. The ladies toilet was the only disappointment: it is in dire need of a makeover as it was pretty old, messy & needing some repairs in the walls, etc.

Good cost effective clean and comfy stay. Four flights of stairs, so I hope you like climbing.

It was a wonderful hotel that I would like to visit again. The staff were very kind to me even though I didn't speak much English.

Staff and service were super friendly and accommodating. Having the pub on the bottom floor was so convenient and they offered guests a discount on pub food and drink which was awesome as the pub food was super good 😊 Unfortunately no elevator which I can see being an issue for older visitors or those with a lot of luggage, but it was fine for us. We honestly did not mind the 4 floor walk up to our room every night. The building is old, but that adds to the charm and they provided us with plenty of blankets and a space heater to help with the Auckland winter. Had to keep the bathroom window open a crack to help with ventilation but after an hour or two it was fine to be shut. The hotel as a whole is super conveniently located and we could walk to anything located within the city center area, or just take the short walk to a bus/train stop(s) close by. From our room we could hear the regular city/street noises, but nothing too loud to keep us awake, and I'm a pretty light sleeper, so it doesn't take much to wake me up.

Not enough diversity in the staff, thus, making it seem indian supremacist . Its dissapointing too cause I feel like this plays a huge factor in the poorly maintenance of the rooms and buiding as a whole. Its okay for a nights rest and a drink in comfort. Didn't experience the restaurant as a I donr feel like curry this and that and this and that. For a hotel named after an amazing icon, it was very minimal in providing that effect . 8 indians , 1 White man. The White man wasn't the manager, thats how I know, the manager is very racist in his hiring as this is a usual case when they're given a platform they don't deserve . Would not stay again

The Shakespeare is very much a funky "character hotel", and it's 100+ year history shows in good and less so ways. Anyone who has stayed in Paris knows what a 4 storey walk up is like - all those stairs can be a challenge, especially with luggage. But the "vibe" is very cool, and it's all the old architectural details that make it such a unique experience. The excellent in-house kitchen and brewery made for very good dinners and tasty beers, and thestaff were nice, especially manager(?), Siddartha, was friendly and efficient, helping us with parking arrangements and guest discounts on meals. Our 2 rooms on the top floor were acceptable, but not great. Carpets and showers were in need of a deep clean (and one shower had drain issues), and there was nowhere to hang jackets or clothes (although 2 hangers provided on door knob), and only one had a chair to sit on. But sheets were clean, beds comfy, and the small fridges did their job. But the price was reasonable, especially for the CBD location - within walking distance of shops, Weta, the art museum, harbour etc. We would stay again.

Our group stayed in Auckland for an event. Overall, we all enjoyed our stay. The location was perfect, 2 minute walk to Sky City and queen street. Check in was easy, all explained post booking. Friendly staff, and an in-house discount for guests was a nice touch. Had a great old style pub feel. Our rooms were clean, and had all the basics we needed. The building itself is pretty tired, and it does have old sash windows, so you may need ear plugs! Thanks for a great weekend!

The location is great, close to everything. The room is clean and comfortable, the A/C works fine and the staffs are friendly and helpful. The only issue to me is the Wi-Fi unstable.

The location was great. The hotel was basic. Please keep in mind there is no proper front desk at this hotel. They might be able to store your luggage at 11:30am when the bar opens but besides that it’s strict 2pm check in. The staff were nice and did their best to help. I landed early and had to carry luggage around before check in.
