What I needed was a room that was comfortable, fairly clean, and quiet enough to let me sleep properly, even if the location put me right in the middle of the city’s busiest street. The floor had been mopped recently, the reception desk was clear, and there were a few potted plants that gave the space a cleaner feel than most hotels in this price range. One queen bed with white linens, a small desk by the window, a flat-screen TV mounted on the wall, and a bathroom tucked to the left of the entrance. The linens were smooth, with no visible stains or loose threads. The bedspread was folded neatly, and the pillows were plump but not overly high. I sat on the edge of the bed and pressed down. The mattress was firmer than I expected. I prefer that. Soft mattresses tend to leave me sore, and this one felt like it would support a full night’s sleep. I walked to the window next. It was a large sliding glass window with thick curtains drawn to the side. Outside was Jalan Ratulangi, alive with motorbikes, cars, and the occasional public minivan. From the 5th floor, the view was mostly rooftops and the tops of passing vehicles, with the signboard of a 24-hour minimart glowing across the street. I slid the window open a crack to test the seal. The noise came in immediately, but it wasn’t overwhelming. It was the kind of city sound you expect when you stay in the center—engines, distant horns, people calling to each other. When I closed the window fully and pulled the curtains, the sound dropped by about half. It was still there if I listened for it, but it wouldn’t keep me awake. The glass and the frame were in good condition, no gaps, no rattling. For a hotel that sits directly on one of Manado’s main roads, that was a relief. The bathroom was next. It wasn’t large, but it was clean. The tiles on the floor and wall had no mildew stains. The sink was free of toothpaste residue, and the mirror had been wiped properly. The shower had decent water pressure, and the drain wasn’t clogged. The toilet flushed cleanly, and there was no lingering odor. The hotel provided two small towels, a hand towel, and basic toiletries—shampoo, soap, and a toothbrush set. Everything looked unused and neatly arranged. For me, this was the “fairly clean” standard I look for. Not five-star luxury, but no reason to hesitate before using anything. I unpacked quickly, plugged in my laptop, and tested the Wi-Fi. It connected on the first try, and the speed was enough for video calls and streaming. The desk by the window was large enough for my laptop and a notebook, and the chair had decent lumbar support.
