Thailand Travel Guide 2026: New Entry Rules, Visas, and Trending Destinations

Welcome to the Land of Smiles! Planning a trip to Thailand in 2026? You are right on time. Thailand has significantly updated its entry regulations to make travel smoother and more digital. From the mandatory Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) to the generous 60-day visa exemption, staying compliant is key to a hassle-free arrival at Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang.

This complete guide covers everything you need to know about the latest Thai immigration laws, trending 2026 destinations, and essential travel tips for Indonesian nationals and global travelers.

1. Visa Requirements & Exemptions

Thailand has relaxed its visa rules to boost tourism, making it easier than ever to visit.

Visa Exemption (Free Visa)

Nationals of 93 countries, including Indonesian nationals, can enter Thailand without a visa.

  • Duration: Up to 60 days per visit.

  • Extension: You may apply for a one-time extension of another 30 days at a local Immigration Office (Total potential stay: 90 days).

  • Note: For other visa types or long-term stays, please refer to the official Thai Visa Service.

New E-Visa System

Effective since January 1, 2025, Thailand has implemented a unified E-Visa system. You can now apply for visas entirely online through Thai embassies and consulates worldwide, eliminating the need for physical passport submission for visa stickers in many cases.

2. Arrival Procedures & The New TDAC

Effective May 1, 2025, paper arrival cards (TM.6) are obsolete. The system is now fully digital.

The Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)

  • Requirement: All foreign passport holders must submit the TDAC electronically.

  • Timeline: Submit between 3 days prior to your trip up to just before immigration.

  • How to Apply: Submit individually or as a group via the official portal: https://tdac.immigration.go.th.

  • Exemptions: Only applies to travelers strictly transiting/transferring without passing immigration control.

Customs & Tourist Tax

  • Tourist Tax: Thailand is scheduled to fully implement a THB 300 tourist tax in 2026. This fee is used for the maintenance of tourist destinations and insurance coverage. It is typically included in your airline ticket price, but always check your ticket breakdown.

  • Financial Proof: Immigration officers may randomly check for proof of funds. You should have access to at least THB 10,000 per person or THB 20,000 per family (cash or equivalent).

3. Transit Policy

If you are flying through Thailand to another destination, specific rules apply:

  • Transit Less Than 12 Hours: Travelers transiting at Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or Don Mueang (DMK) for less than 12 hours generally do not require a visa, provided they stay strictly within the international transit area and are booked on a through-ticket (luggage checked to final destination).

  • Transit More Than 12 Hours: If your layover exceeds 12 hours, or if you need to pass through immigration to re-check bags (e.g., switching between non-partnered low-cost carriers), you must enter Thailand using the Visa Exemption scheme (if eligible) or apply for a Transit Visa beforehand.

4. Trending Destinations in 2026

While Bangkok and Phuket remain classics, 2026 is all about "Secondary Cities" and sustainable travel.

  • Nan: A peaceful province in Northern Thailand known for its slow life, ancient temples, and misty mountains. Perfect for culture lovers.

  • Koh Kood: Often called the "Maldives of Thailand," this island offers pristine luxury and untouched nature, gaining massive popularity this year.

  • Isan Region (Udon Thani & Khon Kaen): Explore the vibrant Northeast for spicy cuisine, red lotus lakes, and UNESCO historical sites.

5. Essential Cultural Etiquette

To travel respectfully in Thailand, keep these "Do's and Don'ts" in mind:

  • The Wai: The traditional Thai greeting (palms pressed together) is a sign of respect. It is polite to return a Wai if offered one.

  • Feet: The feet are considered the lowest part of the body. Never point your feet at people or Buddha images, and never step over someone or food.

  • Temples: Dress modestly. Shoulders and knees must be covered. Always remove your shoes before entering the main prayer hall.

  • Monarchy: The Thai Royal Family is deeply revered. Avoid any negative discussions or gestures regarding the monarchy, as strict Lese Majeste laws apply.

6. Smart Travel Tips

  • Connectivity: Purchase a local eSIM before arrival for instant data.

  • Cashless Payment: Thailand is largely cashless. Look for "PromptPay" or QR code payment options at convenience stores and street vendors.

  • Transport: In Bangkok, utilize the BTS Skytrain and MRT Metro to beat the traffic. For intercity travel, booking flights via tiket.com ensures you get the best domestic rates.

7. Best Time to Visit

  • High Season (Cool Season): November to February. The weather is dry and pleasant, perfect for exploring temples and islands.

  • Shoulder Season (Hot Season): March to May. It gets very hot, but this is the time for the famous Songkran (Water Festival) in April.

  • Green Season (Rainy Season): June to October. Expect short, heavy showers. This is the best time for lush nature, fewer crowds, and lower accommodation rates on tiket.com.

8. Safety & Emergency Contacts

Thailand is generally very safe, but it is wise to keep these numbers handy:

  • Tourist Police: 1155 (English spoken, 24 hours)

  • Medical Emergency: 1669

  • Police (General): 191
