The warm and genuine service at this Roman stands out. Traditional Japanese Roman with only Japanese rooms and a shared bathroom facility only in Japan. It has a beginning and is essentially a bath in this case. This was our first hotel to experience true Japanese personal hospitality. The owner gave us a warm welcome and went out of his way to look after us, even offering to drive us to a local viewing spot and calling us from our room to witness a local children's halloween tradition. We chose to have a set dinner and breakfast included. Dinner was excellent, with traditional Japanese cuisine for soup, sushi, oyster rice, slow roasted beef, and delicious fresh meat. Breakfast was similar, which challenged our western morning tastebuds a little. We travelled with our 2-year-old, and this was the only hotel that specifically offered children's meals for her. During our cycle route from Onomichi to Wari, we stayed at this Roman. Numerous towns, including this one, are functional, industrial, and have functioning harbours, rather than scenic and gorgeous. This is compensated by the people's friendliness of the people. Instead of tourist destinations, we saw the real, friendly, and working side of Japan. Recommended for cyclists seeking a genuine and warm, if a somewhat dated Roman.

I was a little nervous about traveling so far off the beaten path, but I'm so glad I did! My Chimney adventure began with an excursion to Hakatajima. The owner is so warm and kind that I felt immediately reassured and comfortable in the welcoming environment of this fourth-generation family-run establishment. The evening meal was worth the price of staying there! The proprietor speaks excellent English and even took me in person to rent a bicycle for my bicycle tour back to Mahari, which I strongly recommend.
