The staff and amenities were good, but we have given this property a five star rating for its location, setting and vibe. It is further down the coast from the big gated resorts and is close to the white river. If you’re independently minded and like doing your own thing - perhaps with a rental car as we had, or even if you don’t- then this offers more freedom than a mega resort . One other thing we liked was that it is popular with Jamaican visitors, not just tourists . It enabled a lot more cultural exposure. The breakfast is excellent, with eggs cooked to order, or a Jamaican breakfast . A small quiet beach and colourful murals as decor make it feel quite personable. There is a bar and an ocean deck. There is also free parking. The accommodation is actually a beach hotel and not a resort like others in Ocho Rios- with multiple pools and the like. It is also a slightly older property with a rustic charm. If you want a flashy and new resort, where you’ll only meet tourists and staff, this is not the place for you. If you want an authentic, decent quality beach hotel vibe and a great base for exploring then we strongly recommend the Sand and Tan

After researching online and reading tons of reviews for many hotels, resorts, and bnb's in and around Ocho Rios, we booked a 6-night stay at Sand and Tan, and I'm so incredibly glad we did! Breakdown: What the other reviews got RIGHT: This hotel is right on the beach and has all of the basics. Our room was exactly as advertised and clean. Basic housekeeping was included. Small fridge, microwave, AC that worked great, WIFI that had no issues, hair dryer, safe, and an ironing board. Nothing too fancy- just the basic amenities I believe most would expect. Breakfast was included- and it was great! Eggs any way, bacon, sausage, waffles, and more! The restaurant menu was more or less identical to what they have on their website- a mixture of Greek, Jamaican, and American dishes, about $20-$25 per plate. We ate there at least once a day and were very happy with the food. The staff was fine. Most were friendly; some were busy at times, but none were rude or unwelcoming. They do offer day passes for beach and bar access, so on days when there is a cruise ship in port, they get busy for a while, and on weekends- specifically Friday evening and all day Saturday- they are swamped with people who buy the day passes. During these times, it was harder to get service. The beach and river were incredible. Gorgeous. And all of the rooms have a view. For us, it was worth not having super fancy all-inclusiveness to be steps from the beach! Note: have to Uber into the city.

The room was clean. Only 2 towels. No wash clothes or hand towels or bath mat. There was no hot water for showers. Only luke warm water. The hair dryer didn't work and we had to ask twice to get a hair dryer sent to the room. Also had to ask twice for wash clothes. The breakfast was very good and the staff was always kind and pleasant. The beach bar and the staff there was great. I've stayed there many times before and this was not the same as what we've come to expect.

Loved that this hotel is directly on the beach; can hear waves crashing at night from the room with a balcony and huge glass doors facing the ocean. Sunset and sunrise views make it incredibly unique and special; VIP lounge in a beach tree! And beach bar with so much vibes there is no need to go anywhere else for fun times. White river is literally steps away and the local fish pot restaurant is awesome. Very safe place! DJ and local restaurant hosting on Saturdays and Sundays. Staff Sarah, Steve, Ingrid, Campbell, all of them are so great! And the breakfast included is unmatched anywhere in the vicinity. There is also lunch and dinner options better than most restaurants you can find. The local vibe and local people cannot be any better anywhere on the island. I will most definitely stay here over and over again! -Sheldon Webb

My favorite place to stay in Ochi. I walk out my door and there is the amazing beach. The river is near. Jet skis and fun. The food is delicious!!!!

This was a great hotel, great people, and it has a million $ view and a beautiful beach right in front of your bed room window!!! Also the ocean that connects to the river was such a dream and just a few steps away!!! My major reason for giving it better ratings. And very nice and helpful people taking care of the guests. Food was also great. The restaurant in the hotel had good food to offer. It is not a fancy and luxurious hotel and not new. Keep that in mind. I have a very high standard for cleanliness. It was ok. My only complains: I wish they had a better mattress, because of my bad back. But we managed with the foam cushings from the big chair and made it softer. A microwave in the room would be nice. But we managed with the water kettle. And: some trash will be seen outside the hotel area. The hotel keeps the hotel area clean, but a few steps out, not so much. At night all we heard just the waves from the ocean. BUT, waking up every morning to this million dollar view, and seeing the ocean right from our bed, was worth every minute of it. Make me forget my pains and more. We definitely would come back here again. We had a great stay. Thank you.
