Before our sons wedding, we stayed at this lovely hotel for a few nights. Except that the cleaners tossed out things we had not put in the bin packing we had kept to protect the inevitable gift of a bottle of sake, I don't have a lot of complaints about the lodging, but the bar fees are another matter. My wife and I went to the bar for a quick beer the night before the wedding. Although the bartender spoke very little English, we were informed that they had two draft japanese beers, each priced at 540 yen for a small glass, about 330 my. When I went to pay, I expected 8 to be added to the standard vat type tax, so I expected to pay less than 1200 yen. However, the bill was 1900 yen. I challenged the bartender, who mentioned the 8 tax and also a service charge. I think we were charged 200 or 300 yen for the bowl of mixed nuts, which we neither requested or consumed. So, the result was that we spent more than 14 for 2 small beers in an OK, but not great hotel. The lesson to learn here is to be clear about what will be added to the advertised base price and refuse any snacks offered as they will be overpriced. If you want to eat, go for a meal!
