Walking in was like stepping back to Coronation year, E2R I mean! This grand old lady looks exactly as she would have when our late Queen took possession of the Dominion. It's a beautiful time warp and so inexpensive. Huge rooms, clean, comfortable. The bathrooms are great. A lovely breakfast in the delightful top floor dining room bar looking over the port is not fancy but just what is required. The aircon works well but the water pressure in the shower a bit of a let down but hey, we cope! Ceiling fans would be nice. The public areas are just worth exploring, and it takes up a whole block! Wander the colonnades and discover old Colombo.

The hotel is well-located, the rooms enormous with very old furniture! A little rundown in places but that’s why the price is low, and I hope no-one “improves” it any time soon! Do not use the tuk-tuk drivers outside the hotel, or believe anyone who tells you “today is a special day”These people are nothing to do with the hotel. Solo women travellers especially beware

I truly enjoyed my stay here. I loved the historical significance of this hotel. I rated it exceptionally well because one must understand that the hotel is over 175 years old. Sri Lanka has to recognize the importance of preserving this historical part of town. So much potential in these golden age buildings

Ein Hotel mit Geschichte. Man spürt den Geist des Reisens. Es ist ein großer Augenblick für mich in diesem ehrwürdigen Hotel zu übernachten. Die Drinks und der Seafood-Salat im 4. Stock mit grandioser Aussicht sind empfehlenswert. Die Betten sind ausgezeichnet.

What can I say? Not a five-star hotel, but a five-star value and historical relic. Queen Elizabeth and Chekov stayed here, so can you. Perfectly clean and adequate, centrally located.

I reserved the Grand Oriental for three nights for my family and my infant child, a yearold. I reserved this accommodation because I was intrigued by a hotel from the turn of the century that was still operating as a hotel but as a kind of low-cost, three-star lodging. It was honestly like being at the Titanic because it had so much antique furniture, a sense of old grandeur, intriguing twists and turns, and the prettiness of a place that needed a thorough cleaning. If only the walls could speak! The mini fridge and hot water issues broke up our room. All of this, however, was a feature of the charm because the staff was so friendly and our expectations were mirrored in the star stay. The staff went above and beyond to ensure that the issues were resolved and we were at ease due to the minor inconveniences mentioned above. They did everything with a smile and provided excellent service. I would suggest my family and friends stay here. Also, the location was strategically close to the railway station, the Dutch hospital restaurants, and the Gall Face Green area was close by. Thank you, Grand Oriental Staff, and management for a pleasant visit.

I'm delighted to return. My companion and I spent the night here. We arrived late for work in combination after some intense travel schedules, and we were well greeted. The hotel is situated in a prime location in the heart of the island. With a lovely view of the harbor, I was given a lovely smoking suite. The accommodations provided were quite quiet, pleasant, with enough space and a pleasing odor. While I had a meal and a game of billiards once, I still think that the food tastes nice. The restroom was quite good. The ancient theme was quite appealing. Some locations, such as the path need to be maintained to keep them up. Furthermore, you can concentrate a little more on exemplary service employees. All in all, perfect oriental. When they have a pool, this will always be a nice hotel for me during my lengthy stay. I appreciate your hospitality team Grand Oriental Hotel..

The brunch buffet in the harbor room was really nice. There wasn't much choice here, but it was well prepared. Desserts were also very nice. The violin player's music was very relaxing. And then, the service was also very good. It's a recommendation to get your dinner buffet.

Beautiful old hotel building next to the old port buildings. The main foyer has recently been renovated and is a wonderful place to get a coffee if you're in the area and want to take in the sights. It has a great potential to be a really lovely place.

Overall, the dinner buffet could be recommended. The buffet dinner in the harbour room was very nice, not a very large selection but tastefully prepared and the desserts were very nice too. Also the music by a violin player was very soothing.
