The hotel is a delightful experience. It is in a quiet location overlooking Chester-le-Street, but within walking distance of the town and Riverside Park. The room was comfortable and clean. The decor is in keeping with the theme of the castle, and well maintained. Reception, bar and restaurant staff are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast choices are extensive and the restaurant caters for vegan and GF diners. Lumley Castle is my first choice for staying in the Newcastle area; it never disappoints.

Had a lovely overnight stay for my special birthday. Beautiful afternoon tea with helpful staff. Room was oldie and so comfortable - had a lovely nights' sleep and was woken up by the dawn chorus. Gorgeous! Definitely 10/10

Warm welcome and very friendly staff. Great food, comfortable clean room. Much more interesting than a modern block. I would book again when staying in the area

Had a lovely stay at Lumley Castle, our room was in the courtyard and had a lovely comfy bed. Delicious breakfast and very good value for money.

My only complaint is we didn’t stay more than one night. Brilliant staff. Accommodation perfect. Food fabulous. Also, the bar area was wonderful. Best glass of SV I’ve ever had in a hotel. Bliss!

Lumley Castle has a strong connection with my childhood home; Maltby Model Village, close to Sandbeck Hall, the residential home of the Earl of Scarborough and the Lumley family, who own Lumley Castle

We booked 3 nights in a classic castle room. This place is amazing, a real castle and fortification hundreds of years old. The walk to the room from reception involved many twists and turns with walls a foot thick. A lift will take you to the first floor but you need the grand staircase to get to the second floor. On the way you will pass many sitting areas and chairs in various nooks and crannies. The room was not huge, but big enough with a bath/ shower on a raised area from the bedroom floor. This place is an experience and the castle is steeped in history. The dining room is in the vaulted basement and is very atmospheric. Breakfast is superb. Help yourself to anything from the continental table in the room 2 doors down the corridor and choose your main breakfast from the menu which will be cooked to order. Very efficient with friendly and well trained staff. We ate in the restaurant on the first night. The choice is small but the food top class. The whole stay was a first class experience.

I enjoyed a very pleasant stay at this hotel. The setting is really nice, offering a calm and welcoming atmosphere throughout. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. Breakfast was particularly impressive, with an excellent selection across both the continental and cooked options, all of which tasted great. While certain aspects of the room showed minor signs of age, it was very clean and well maintained, ensuring a comfortable stay. Overall, this is a charming hotel with attentive service and high‑quality dining.

We recently stayed at Lumley Castle and had an absolutely fantastic experience. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed and well looked after by the friendly and attentive staff. One of the highlights of our stay was being upgraded to a room in the main castle building, which made our visit even more special. Staying within the historic heart of the castle really added to the magic of the experience and made us feel immersed in its incredible history and character. Our room was beautiful, comfortable, and full of charm, while still offering all the modern comforts we could have wanted. Exploring the castle and its stunning surroundings was a real pleasure, and every corner seemed to have its own story to tell. The food was excellent, and breakfast in such a unique and atmospheric setting made every meal feel like an occasion. Throughout our stay, the staff consistently went above and beyond to ensure everything was perfect. Lumley Castle is a truly special place that offers something far beyond a typical hotel stay. The upgrade to the main building was a wonderful surprise and helped create memories that we will treasure for years to come. We would not hesitate to recommend it and are already looking forward to returning.

Always love our overnight stays at Lumley. Love the more quirky rooms in particular. Breakfast is always gorgeous, and well organised. Staff are all lovely, approachable, friendly, cheerful. The only two things I might say is that the Library Bar doesn't have a whole lot of choice for bigger plate meals. Burgers, fish and chips, pie and ravioli. Maybe 2 or 3 other choices? Would benefit someone like me with OA cervical spine, to have a choice of 2 pillow types, firm and the usual hotel soft. I find it very difficult to stay asleep on the very soft, hence being awake a lot of last night, due to very soft pillows causing more pain. Just a choice of 2 would be better, firm, and soft. Other than that, another gorgeous stay. Can't wait to come back.

We returned after the room had been serviced to find my little girls teddy tucked up in bed with a packet of biscuits. She was thrilled. Lovely thought. Thank you to the room service team!
