Take a step back in time and seek this diamond in the ruff. This retro renovated old fashioned motel will have you in a peaceful place as soon as you pull in the drive. Key takeaways of staying at “Swell Motel” include the following: Pool on site, very clean Local art shop on location, you must go! Pull up to your room, your space at “your” door. Welcoming office, friendly staff. Meet Laura the local owner, who makes you feel like family immediately. Amazing outdoor kitchen to cook your local catch with a covered pavilion, with enough seating to accommodate their weekly local live music on the performance stage with dance floor. Meet the locals who come, and listen to their stories of generations of island living, tales of storms, and a history that will change your life. Time here is meant to be spent outside with every amenity you can imagine. Retro bikes to ride for free, playground, corn hole, horseshoes, amazing outdoor state of the art fish cleaning station I was stunned by. Huge new ice maker to pack your coolers, best one I had seen ever at a motel or five star hotel. The rooms….huge and renovated. Very clean, high end linens, and comfortable beds, plenty of pillows, and a kitchen with everything you need. Huge new shower, and an amazing room overall. I can’t say enough about this diamond in the ruff. I was there on a getaway from the crowded northern beaches for a few days, and can’t wait to go back . A mental retreat for your soul .

The property was very unique. Cats in and around the check-in office first building of rooms converted into art gallery gift shop. I did enjoy petting the cats Lulu and Peaches... And I bought a piece of artwork in the shop that reminded me of my cat that had just passed last year. Rooms were very spacious bathrooms look like they were updated very recently and very nice... Including a Marge built in shelf in the shower for wife and kids to put all there hair care products! Woman at front desk and woman at the art gallery were extremely hospitable and friendly. It is in the middle of everything ...gift shops around, tackle shops around, sushi/seafood very nice restaurant with salad bar right across the street. Right near entrance to the lighthouse beach access area the motel itself has free bike/kayak rentals... many other items around like horseshoes. basketball court, volleyball, pickle ball, baseball, next door, ... Even a really neat cement full skateboard park! Definitely go do some local shopping at Connors and bring back some meats to prepare on the grill very nice outdoor area two of them. I believe they have live bands on Saturday on the stage and I saw poetry readings I Believe on Wednesday.

The swell staff were all so friendly, including the cats. We stayed for 5 nights and didn't have a single problem. Would definitely stay here again if we make it back to the OBX.

I haven’t stayed in a motel in over 15 years, this place was WONDERFUL. Super clean, WONDERFUL, friendly staff, and everything you need! Would definitely recommend!

My daughter and I had a quick trip through Buxton. We were very happy with the cleanliness of the room and location for our trip. Laura was helpful w/ questions and offering advice as we continued our travel. Would definitely visit the Swell Motel again!

I love staying here for short trips! The staff are so friendly and helpful with local recommendations and the room is always clean and so cute! The only minor issue I have personally come across is the road leading into the motel, but otherwise one of the best places in all of the OBX!
