Austrian Airlines AG, sometimes abbreviated as Austrian, is an Austrian national airline, which is a subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group. The airline is headquartered at Vienna International Airport, Schwechat, which is also the central hub of the airline. Austrian Airlines was formed in 1957 by the merger of Air Austria and Austrian Airways. During the 2000s, Austrian Airways developed through the acquisition of Rheintalflug and Lauda Air and adopted the name Austria in 2003. Throughout the decade, Austrian Airways suffered several years of loss, precisely in 2008, the owner of the airline, which is the Austrian government, was advised to sell the airline to foreign companies. In 2009, the Lufthansa Group bought the airline after receiving approval from the European Commission based on an investigation in the tender process.
